Chatham New York Not very likely as Amos birthplace/early home Chatham did not exist in 1778 it was formed from Canaan and Kinderhook in 1795. Kings District (1772) became Canaan in 1788. A very few settlers came around 1760, but Northrup name is not mentioned. Kinderhook had a very few settlers in about 1750. The area was the subject of disputer land claims for an extended period with a settlement after the revolution. It was an area of sharply divided loyalties prior to the revolution. It was after the revolution that many prominent estates changed hands, either because the owners had fled to Canada or the land had been confiscated outright. This is the perid when there was increased settlement in Kinderhook by New Englanders. The area was so predominantly dutch that records were kept in the dutch language" Eli Jr and Nehemiah were among the first Northrops in the area. a family later related to us, the Cadys, are among the very earliest settlers. ) |
