The Chatham Speculation --Starting Point for "our" Northrops

The Chatham Speculation

The history of Northrops according to a. Judd Northrop has Alvin Northrop as the son of Amos and brother of Gerrit Northrop born probably at Chatham, NY.

After an exhaustive internet search in 2008, I have come to the conclusion that the connection to Chatham for "our" Amos may or may not be correct. There are many Northrops, many Amos Northrops and a good many of these were in the parts of NY that border Connecticut and Massachusetts.

So here is information for Chatham, Columbia County, NY as the origin of the Amos Northrop line.

This is a map of northwestern Connecticut and adjacent portions of New York and Massachusetts.

This includes the likely locations for Amos Northrop through his life and perhaps his ancestors.

A Judd Northrop reports that our Amos died in Warren CT. I have not been able to get any information on this death beyond the reference in A Judd Northrop's book. Vital Statistics/cemetary information for Warren is not currentlly available and the contact listed does not have a viable email address

Two of the locations documented for Amos are Kent, Connecticut and Chatham New York. This shows the current path from Kent to Chatham.

Another documented location for Amos is Warren, Connecticut. This would have been a relatively short trip. The maps shows the current path from Kent to Warren, Connecticut.

This home on Pequot Avenue, Southport, Connecticut is a recently restored example of the Northrop Brothers fine carpentry and building in the Southport-Greeens Farms area.
