Sybil DAYTON[1]
1766 - 1855

from Alan Ives via Ancestry comment: Sybil was buried as Sybil Buck, supposedly in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hallstead / Great Bend, PA. However, there is no stone, at least that is readable today. An early PA history tells us that she was buried near Nathaniel Ives. This was one of her sons from her 1st marriage to Aner Ives, Jr. (9 Jun 1767 - 27 Sep 1805), who was wounded by Zenas Beebe in a quarrel between the two of them. Sibyl is thought to have been a Caswell, born in New Haven, CT. Can't find such a record so far. Her dates: 2/3 Jan 1766 to 2 Oct 1855. Besides Nathaniel (b. 1791), she had Caswell (b. 1786, and my ancestor), Reuben (b. 1799), and Aner Henry / Harry Aner (b.1801). The boys were all b. Kent, CT. I suppose that she and Mr. Ives were m. 1785-6. A church fire in Bethany, CT destroyed all the records, and I suspect their records were among those lost. Sibyl is mentioned once in the PA histories as Sibyl Dayton, and once on a document naming Nathaniel as her son. I have not discovered whether divorce, desertion or death occurred, but she was m. in 1814 to Ichabod Buck, and so wasn't a Dayton very long. In 1850, Nathaniel Iveses neighbors are the Elias Dayton family. After a terrible mishap in court (Mr. Beebe was set free!), the Iveses left CT, and came to Lawsville, PA (still pop. 100!!!). Cannot tell if Mr. Dayton came with them from CT, was already dead, or she met him in PA, but it looks like the Dayton's were CT people. Find them both in Kent and New Milford, CT.

Fencing has been installed around the historic Merwin Brook Cemetery located on the property. It is the second oldest burial ground in Brookfield. At least 50 stones stood here at one time. Members of the Hawley, Merwin, Wheeler, Northrop, and Baldwin families are buried here.
